Official SU Response: Our SU Equity Officer has been in contact with Simon Kelly from the University. Simon chairs the Neurodiversity Staff Network and has extensive knowledge and experience around SEND. The discussion focused on arranging awareness sessions for student groups.
Following this, our Head of Student Experience has picked it up and invited Simon to deliver a workshop at Committee Camp on 3rd June 2026 for newly elected committee members. Simon has suggested the following:
“For student societies, I’d be very happy to run an hour or 90‑minute introduction to neurodiversity, along with a group exercise exploring different neurodivergent lived experiences. I’ve run this for university staff several times, and it’s very interactive and leads to some great discussions – both with neurotypical and neurodivergent attendees.”
This is a very positive development. While final confirmation is still needed from Simon, it’s highly likely that this will be implemented.
It feels like many societies, aren't aware of how to deal with things such as autism and ADHD, and so exclude potential members. It would be good to have more societies be aware of these things.
